Episode 2 On SMC Discourse Explores Blockchain as a Tool Against Misinformation

On Thursday April 10, 2025, the second episode of the SMC discourse ignited a timely conversation on news veracity and blockchain – a battle against misinformation. This session featured Professor Kingsley Ukaoha of Wigwe University.

Explaining concepts such as decentralised blockchains, immutable ledger systems, and valuable tools, he delivered an engaging and powerful presentation on blockchain technology — in safeguarding integrity of news and information in an era dominated by fake news, Professor Ukaoha demystified this technology using case studies with pilot initiatives that have been used as journalistic content.

During the Q&A segment, students and faculty raised concerns on scalability, cost, and accessibility of blockchain in various countries to which Professor Ukaoha responded with optimism while suggesting areas and means of partnerships.

This episode enabled the participants of this session to challenge the conventional ways of thinking and repositioning the future of the media. As misinformation continues to cause societal discord, emphasis is placed on public trust alongside minimizing misinformation with timely reminders — serving as critical players in leading academic reports truthfully, technologically, ethically.
